Augusta State University, or ASU for short, is a public university located in Augusta, which is a consolidated city in the US state of Georgia, with a population estimated at a number of more than 195 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census. It is the principal city of the Augusta-Richmond County Metropolitan Statistical Area, which in 2008, had more than 530 000 people, living within its limits.
ASU was founded in 1783, as the Academy of Richmond County, being opened 2 years later and offering collegiate-level classes from its earliest days. The college became a part of the University System of Georgia, in 1958, when its name was formally changed to Augusta College, which was replaced with the institution's current name, in 1996.
Today, ASU is recognized as the oldest institution in the state of Georgia and one of the best universities in the state. It offers its students, who number approximately 6 600, a vast array of educational programs, including associate, bachelor, master, and specialist degrees in over 50 programs of study as well as a paralegal certificate and a cooperative doctorate, through 3 colleges: Katherine Reese Pamplin College of Arts and Sciences, James M. Hull College of Business, and College of Education.
ASU's athletic teams are known as the Jaguars, who compete in NCAA Division II, in the Peach Belt Conference, in various sports, for both men and women, including in men's basketball, in which they reached the Division II national championship game in Springfield, MA before falling to Winona State, 87-76. The Jaguars have won their first national title in 2010, when they defeated Oklahoma State in the championship match. During the 2009-10 season, the Jaguars briefly reached No. 1 in the national polls, marking the first time in school history that ASU was ranked first in any sport. The other sports in which the Jaguars compete, include: baseball, cross country, softball, tennis and volleyball. Their distinctive colors are blue and white.
Doug Barnard, Jr., who is an American Democratic politician, and Oliver Wilson, professional golfer, are ASU's most notable alumni.
